"To Be a Rock and Not to Roll"

Thesis Description
"To Be a Rock and Not to Roll", merges the style of contemporary ballet, Joseph Campbell’s concept of the hero’s journey, and music selections by Led Zeppelin into an exhilarating production of a rock ballet. Robert Plant had a fondness of philosophical and mythological stories, specifically J.R.R Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings, and often included references of this archetypical heroic story in the lyrics of his compositions. Five Led Zeppelin songs were chosen to represent five different stages of the hero’s journey. Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, Battle of Evermore, Moby Dick, Bron Y Aur, and Stairway to Heaven provide the soundtrack for our hero as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and growth.

Thesis Description
(Me)mory is inspired by my personal experience with Alzheimer’s Disease. I watched first-hand as the devastating and incurable disease claimed several close family members in both my family and my husband’s family. With the cooperation of the Desert Southwest Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association I conducted personal interviews with patients and their care partners, through which I explored how Alzheimer’s affects individuals, families and communities. Pieces of these interviews are integrated into the score of the piece in order to provide context for each section. (Me)mory is the translation of these stories and experiences into movement.
